Services For People With Disabilities Finding suitable employment opportunities – especially in an uncertain economy – can be difficult for anyone; these challenges can be greatly compounded for people with disabilities. In addition to the usual challenges of finding work, people with disabilities have difficulties with transportation, physical accessibility, and often balancing their earned income against entitlements for which they qualify.
One very effective solution to this problem is the Consumer Navigator model; Consumer Navigators are individuals with disabilities, family members, or advocates who assist customers with disabilities seeking employment in navigating various systems that provide service and support needed to obtain and maintain employment. Consumer Navigators don’t duplicate community services already existing but support individuals with disabilities in obtaining his or her goal.
Arapahoe/Douglas Works! is a partner with Colorado WIN Partners in implementing the Disability Program Navigator. In addition, we work with Employment Works to implement Project TRAIN. This helps people with disabilities receive information about SSA, work incentives, PASS plans, Ticket to Work, and other potential benefits. It also helps them to determine the potential impact of employment earnings on benefits from SSI, SSDI, Medicare, and Medicaid.
