Filling Out Applications
Many employers, especially large companies and government agencies, require you to fill out an application for employment. This is an important part of the screening process, and you should take it seriously. Here are some tips for filling out applications for employment.
Prepare in Advance
Most of the information included on job applications is standard, and is very similar to what is contained on a resume; if you know you are going to be filling out an application, consider bringing a resume along with you to serve as your guide. If there is other information that you know you will need for the application, write it out in advance and bring it with you.
Attach a Resume
Because an application is not personalized, you can improve your chances of standing out from the crowd by attaching a resume to the application. However, you should never use the resume in place of an application, but just as additional information.
Fill Out the Application Completely and Legibly
Take the time to fill out the application completely; many employers will not accept partial applications, so don’t take a chance on getting yourself disqualified. Also, be sure that your writing is easy to read, and that your grammar and spelling are correct. If possible, take the application home with you to be sure you don’t feel rushed when you are filling it out.
Be Positive
Use the application to show the strengths that you can bring to the organization. Don’t dwell on negative feeling you may have about yourself or your job skills. This is your opportunity to show yourself to the organization in the most positive possible light. Especially when referring to your reasons for leaving past work, don’t answer with responses like ‘quit’ or ‘laid off’ – instead, focus on a reason you left, such as ‘seeking additional responsibility’.
Be Honest
Be sure that every element on your application is true; employers can disqualify potential employees (or even dismiss current employees) for lying on their applications. However, don’t feel that you have to volunteer more information than the employer requested.
Be Specific About Position Desired
Whenever possible be specific about your skills and your desired position; try not to respond to questions regarding the position you are looking for with answers like ‘any’ or ‘all’. It is preferable to use the job code or job title when filling out the application. If you are applying for multiple positions, consider filling out an application for each.
Don’t Talk Salary
If the Application asks for salary requirements, you are better off answering with ‘open’ or ‘negotiable’ than putting in a particular number. These responses may offer you more negotiating room if you get the job, and can also help you to avoid being disqualified if your salary requirements are outside the expected range.
