Charting New Horizons: A Story of Collaboration and Innovation

In an era where traditional print media is facing challenges, one publication in the Denver metro area is defying the odds through collaboration and innovation.  OutFront Magazine (OFM), a free printed publication dedicated to local events, current topics, and issues impacting the Denver metro area and the LGBTQ+ community, found itself in a predicament familiar to many print publications: the need for additional writers, editors, and staff positions without the funding to support it.

Arapahoe/Douglas Works!, a workforce center dedicated to connecting individuals with employment opportunities and businesses with skilled workers, became involved to help.  Through an encounter at a local job fair, a workforce specialist from Arapahoe/Douglas Works! connected with Addison Herron-Wheeler, co-owner of OFM, sparking a collaboration that would change the landscape of the publication.

Working closely with a business development representative from Arapahoe/Douglas Works!, OFM embarked on a journey of creating work-based learning (WBL) opportunities and on-the-job training (OJT) positions.  Through the work-based learning program, OJT’s reimburse businesses up to 100% of wages associated with the cost of training.  Today, 12 individuals have completed or are currently enrolled in paid work-based learning opportunities with OFM, and 31 additional participants have been referred. Work-based learning participants cover many roles for producing print media, including editors, writers, sales and marketing professionals, photographers, graphic designers, social media managers, and more.  Through hands-on experience and mentorship from OFM staff, participants have not only honed their skills in the media profession but have also developed transferable skills that are applicable across various industries.

What sets OFM apart is its commitment to providing diverse employment options within the media industry.  OFM has expanded its offering of roles to accommodate the growing needs of the business.  This growth is a testament to successful collaboration with Arapahoe/Douglas Works! and the dedication of both parties to empower individuals and foster growth for careers in media.

The impact of this partnership extends beyond OFM, with plans underway to replicate the model with other media organizations.  By sharing their success story and benefits of work-based learning opportunities, OFM is not only preserving the legacy of their publication but also paving the way for a more diverse media landscape.

In a time when the future of print media may seem uncertain, OFM stands as an example of hope, proving that with the right partnership and a commitment to innovation, traditional publications can thrive in the digital age.
