Bridging the Skills Gap: How Career and Technical Education Prepares Colorado Students for the Workforce

February 5, 2024

Did you know that February is Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month ?

Getting ready for jobs can be a bit like solving a puzzle. Colorado, just like other places, has a challenge called the “skills gap.” This means there’s a difference between what skills companies need and what skills people have. Let’s explore how Colorado is using something special called Career and Technical Education (CTE) to help students bridge this gap and get ready for jobs.

Understanding the Skills Gap

In Colorado, some jobs need special skills, and not enough people have those skills. For example, in September 2023 there were over 20,000 more job postings for health care professions than there were for people to fill those jobs. This is the skills gap. Colorado is working hard to fill this gap, and one great solution is CTE. CTE is like a superpower that helps students learn the exact skills they will need for jobs.

CTE Programs in Colorado

In Colorado, students can join CTE programs in high school and community colleges. These programs teach skills for different jobs like technology, healthcare, and making things. CareerWise Colorado is one of these programs, giving students hands-on experiences and letting them see what real jobs are like.

Practical Skills for Real-World Success

What makes CTE great is that it is not just reading and writing in a classroom. Students get to do things! They learn skills they can use in real jobs. This makes it easier for them to go from school to work because they are already prepared.

Partnerships with Industry

CTE teams up with companies to make sure students learn the latest things. Companies help schools understand what skills they need. This teamwork also gives students chances to meet people in the industry and get hands-on experience. It is like learning from the experts!

Addressing Workforce Diversity

CTE in Colorado wants everyone to have a chance. It does not matter where you are from or who you are – everyone can join in. CTE is like a big door that opens for everyone, making sure every student can earn a good income when they graduate.

In Colorado, CTE helps students get ready for jobs by teaching them the exact skills they need. With hands-on learning, teamwork with companies, and a big welcome for everyone, Colorado’s CTE programs are making sure no one is left behind. So, when it is time for jobs, Colorado’s students are ready to take on the world! Celebrate CTE Month by learning more at www.careerwisecolorado.org.
